THE TREATMENT

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy or Cryosurgery is a highly effective and safe procedure that is used to freeze and destroy benign skin lesions

It uses liquefied nitrous ozide to destroy the tissue by freezing the cell fluid which in turn forms ice shards that rupture the cell membrane which ruptures the cell membrane and destroys the cell and the lesion.

Cryotherapy is beneficia as it is quicker than other treatments and patients can be in and out in minutes. It requires no anaesthesia and has minimal scarring. There are no limitiations on activities (excpet protecting the area from damage or abrasion) and patients can return to normal activites after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone have the Treatment?

Yes. However, skin types and location should be considered carefully prior to treatment.

Can children have Cryopen ® treatments?

Yes, children age 8 and upwards can be treated with parental consent.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment is relatively pain free. Many patients experience a feeling of cold, slight tingling or stinging. There may be a little residual stinging for a few minutes after the treatment. The area may be a little tender in the days following treatment as the skin heals.

What do patients experience during treatment?

Generally, little or no discomfort is experienced during the first few seconds from there a sensation of of cold, stinging or tingling may be felt.

What follow-up is necessary?

A follow-up appointment is scheduled for 2 weeks post treatment. For many lesions further treatment is not necessary. For warts, verrucas and seborrhoeic keratosis up to 3-4 treatments may be required.

Is there a change in pigmentation after treatment?

Both hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation may occur after cryotherapy, generally last a few months, but can be longer lasting. If you have concerns please discuss it before treatment.

What are the risk in darker-skinned patients?

Melanocytes are the most sensitive to cold injury. Therefore, they are the most easily damaged with cryotherapy. Darker-skinned patients need to consider the risks of permanent loss of pigment. Book an information call before treatment to discuss your personal needs.

Will there be scarring?

Typically it leaves the least amount of scarring of any form of lesion removal because it causes the least damage to the connective tissues. Hypopigmented lesions will be noticeable until they darken.
